generic engine for 6x4 Gator???

Hey all, My son picked up a 90's something Gator, we new engine was shot..but didn't know what exactly was wrong. Pulled it out, and sure enough a HOLE in the crank case. Possibly weldable?? I don't know. Could give it a shot.

Otherwise, I know these Kawasaki's FD620d's are hard to come buy AND super expensive.

Was wondering if anyone would know a close equivalent engine that may be fairly "drop in" ready to replace the Kawasaki, and be cheaper?

Any help or tips would be great.

Thanks

I believe "Small Engine warehouse" sells a B&S 1450 Series OHV, kit with the proper taper shaft to accept our old clutches. There will prob still be some fab needed but I understand that's one of the closer fits we can get. Please keep us posted on your project.

no offense..but the Gator Guy was very short with me, like he didn't have time for me.

I sent him an email explaining everything. He sent me one short sentence....."I don't sell used engines, if your core has a hole" I won't sell you an engine."

That was it. So I am looking elsewhere.

Southlake...isn't the 1450 series OHV..just a single cylinder engine, with a pull start?? The one's I have seen are. Let me know. I know they have a single cylinder one for the gator 4x2....would that engine also work in the gator 4x6 ?? (we have the 4x6)

I think he is busy, does it on the side, and gets a lot of tire kickers so to speak.

I think a lot of ppl use SEW to repower. Gator guy runs around $800 to refurb which isnt that far off from going brand new

I thought there was an option for electric start.

AHHH you have a 6x4, I assumed you had 4x2. you'll def need something bigger than the 4x2 replacement motor, my apologies. they must have something there, all you need is the motor with the similar tapered shaft arrangement

I used to race karts and breaking connecting rods and poking holes in the engine case was somewhat regular. All of my holes could be repaired and the engine saved. I'm not saying it's the cheapest option but at least it's an option. I have a XUV-550 and had a lot of trouble with the stock Briggs engine so I replaced it with a Honda.

The B&S Vanguard 23HP engine fits very nicely into the 6x4, with the added benefit of eliminating the radiator, fan and hoses required by the Kaw. Downside is it won't leave room for a power dump actuator.

on SEW the 4x2 motor with electric start is around $800, but when you search for the 6x4, what they offer in gas is nearly $1700! they even have a diesel yanmar (which would be pimp) but its like $2700

for the 4x2, re-powering with new coming in around $800+-, i would opt for a full rebuild of stock motor from gator guy or "precision engineering" in the midwest, will prob come out to be a wash money wise.

Why is there no room for the dump actuator? Is it the muffler? If so, does that put some excessive heat onto/near the battery?

Also looking at replacement options on my 6x4 gator. In addtion to the B&S Vanguard, I came across a Honda GX630 from RepowerSpecialists.Com that ships with a new primary clutch. But it is pricey - nearly $2400. Photos of muffler system looks like it would have the same problem re: space for actuator and heat on battery. Don't know if it would require any of the reported modification re: bed clearance like the Vanguard?

I'm going to take back my earlier assertion that an actuator won't fit with the B&S engine. I replicated an actuator with a piece of scrap wood and it APPEARS to fit, with the closest interference at the spark plug boot, comes withing 1/4". Your results may vary.

I in put the BS twin Vangard. It fits the engine bay and the lift fits in my 6x4. The choke cable has to be replaced. I added a couple brackets with a spring so it will open up when you replace it. People on the farm kept driving around with the choke on. I adapted the throttle hook up onto the BS so I could use the throttle. The air cleaner hits the bed , but after a few weeks it gets formed into place. I have trouble with the idle creeping up and you have to tap the throttle to slow it down. The biggest PITA is removing the starter, you have to loosen the motor and life it up a couple inches. Changing the oil filter is hard. The original engine started great, except for being water cooled, fouling the spark plug and keeping the crankcase half full of oil it was good. The BS will work, but it is not a simple install
