1996 John Deere Gator 6x4 - Engine Problems

I have lovingly restored this older 6x4 but am having some issues with the engine. I am a weekend warrior and a massive tinkerer. I can usually fix anything if pointed in the right direction. I recently changed the spark plugs, carburetor and fuel pump.

Built on 12/7/94
PC2387
SERIAL #W006X-4X011774
ENGINE #FD620D-056404

I uploaded a video of the problem I am having. It idles perfectly then when I run it at speed it sometimes loses power then blows out blue smoke. Any advice would be appreciated.

At 38 seconds it developed a loud noise
At 55 seconds loss of power
At 1:27 Blue smoke appeared
At 1:50 Blue smoke appeared

im guessing head gasket, warped head, or valves. possible rebuild / repower in your future. I was pretty cool with everything until the plumes of blue smoke! how many hours on the engine?

No idea on hours as I bought it used but I imagine a ton. Someone mentioned teeth coming off the cam (As it might be plastic) and timing is off or ignitor box

Your cam gear is OK, it's a no-go at all if it was bad. I'm going to take a different tack and question whether the smoke you're seeing is even exhaust smoke. What I'm seeing, especially in the second episode is smoke emitting generally from the driver's side of the engine, not specifically from the exhaust. Also, the smoke isn't as blue as I'd expect oil smoke to be. So I'd be looking at an issue with the clutches and/or transaxle. Just guessing, but it could be an intermittent bogging down caused by a sticking brake or other tranny malfunction causing the belt to drag, overheat and smoke. This would also explain the bogging down. It's a long shot, but next time it happens quickly stop the engine and check the belt and primary clutch for excessive heat. Good luck and keep us posted.
BTW, great looking machine!

Now that I re-watch this, I think you might be correct. The engine starts and seems to run fine. Would your recommendation be to remove the whole thing and rebuild then? Never done that but am up for the challenge. I am sure you tube has some videos on this.

If belt drag is the problem the primary suspect would be the secondary clutch or tranny/brake. Doubtful it would be your primary clutch. I'd do a little more investigation before doing any rebuilding or replacing.

Well it appears you have something here. I looked at the clutch and looked at what it should look like and it is missing some clutch buttons. Do people always just buy a new one for $400 or can I rebuild this? I know this definitely is an issue but is there a way to know if something internally is wrong also that needs to be dealt with at the same time?

Buttons are an easy replacement, and available from deere. They should be in the $20 - $25 range for a set of 6

Looks like the pulley nearest you is about to fly off at times. Why is it moving?!?!?!

Perhaps this will help? You can replace the button/ramps at home.
