Oiled foam filters do not capture as many dust particles as a quality paper filter. On a road vehicle not operating often in a dusty environment, you can normally get by with such a filter. In a heavily dusty environment like on a dirt road or trail, ESPECIALLY following another vehicle that is creating a dust cloud, an oiled filter is NOT the best protection.

Allowing dirt through the intake tract will eat up the top piston rings.

I have no such experience with an RSX850i on dusty roads or trails, but I did see such ring damage in my off road motorcycle racing days.

what about a precleaner?? i know with certain ATV filters most companys thats make aftermarket filters that require oil will also offer a prefilter to keep that main dust from getting to the filter. just a thought

Yes the ideal world would be a foam precleaner over a quality paper filter AS LONG AS the resulting flow is adequate.

I ran a precleaner over a 5" x 14" paper filter on my old four wheel drive with a big V8. In that case the 5" tall filter made for a lot if extra flow that gave some margin when it started clogging up in the dust.

If you are running in dusty conditions and still need max performance, you might look into a larger filter to make up for clogged conditions.

Been running them for well over a year. Here's a link from the original thread:

I have about 5,200 miles on my machine. I change them pretty frequently since I have two of them. Also, I had to replace my throttle body earlier this year and got a good look at things between throttle body and filter. Dirt wise, things were good.

Always good to hear first hand experience.

Are you in a dusty environment? That is, do you find yourself running in a visible cloud of dust occasionally?

Minshall offers meaningful data here. Note that he does indeed sometimes ride in a DUSTY environment. Many people that live in certain areas may never experience riding or driving in a cloud of dust that you can barely see through. I can tell you that only a very short distance in a cloud of visible dust can completely cover any air filter with dirt.

Those making the paper/foam decision, however, should pay close attention to the details. Minshall is successfully using oiled foam, but the important thing to pay attention to is the fact that, 1. he is taking good care of it and 2. he is using the prefilter.

Some people don't have such good maintenance habits, so oiled foam might not be a good choice for them.
