I have unhooked the temperature sensor and it makes no difference it is hard to start and runs rough any ideas

Check the main ground on the frame behind the battery, in front of engine, right side, on frame. Just follow your negative batt cable down to frame. Check there for loose or bad connection. Strange things happen when a bad ground is present.

I'll try that I checked it today but it seems good so I'll take it apart and clean it up john deere mechanic said the thermostat wires could be shorting out but it seems good to thank for the help I'll let you know how it goes

So for anyone who still has this problem. The ground sys on these gators suck! Run a ground from the engine to the frame and it will fix the temp gauge reading HOT! I went from the bracket right next to the temp sensor to the main frame ground. Problem solved!
