Grinding Gears

I have (I believe it is) a 1995 6x4 Gator. I bought it in 2001. It has always had trouble that the gears grind when trying to shift into forward or reverse. I use the choke to have the engine slow to almost dying to shift into gears. I don't know whether it's the primary or secondary clutch that needs to be adjusted or replaced. I just put new wheels and tires on it (had originals from 1995). I don't have a local John Deere service area to have the clutch adjusted. I have been watching videos on replacing the primary clutch and adjusting the secondary. I don't know which to start with. Also, I've read about an 18 MPH clutch. I'm in very rural Maine and this machine crawls, would like to have a little more speed.

JD Clutch Doc aka Clutch Doc, can help with a sticking primary clutch. FYI, a sticking clutch issue can not be resolved with lubricants.

If you should change to a 18mph version, be certain the secondary clutch is compatible, there are differences.

I know he works on newer clutches but not certain if his work pertains to pre-2000 clutches.

JD will be willing to throw new parts at it but unlikely they will adjust either primary or secondary.

JD Clutch Doc can service older Gator Primary Clutch‘s, as well.
