I have (I believe it is) a 1995 6x4 Gator. I bought it in 2001. It has always had trouble that the gears grind when trying to shift into forward or reverse. I use the choke to have the engine slow to almost dying to shift into gears. I don't know whether it's the primary or secondary clutch that needs to be adjusted or replaced. I just put new wheels and tires on it (had originals from 1995). I don't have a local John Deere service area to have the clutch adjusted. I have been watching videos on replacing the primary clutch and adjusting the secondary. I don't know which to start with. Also, I've read about an 18 MPH clutch. I'm in very rural Maine and this machine crawls, would like to have a little more speed.

Diagnose and fix the problem before you do any more damage to the transmission.
If you turn the engine off does it shift into gear OK? If so that can indicate that the primary clutch is not releasing and is still trying to turn the transmission. In most cases this is caused by the primary clutch (the one on the engine) not fully opening. You can also open the machine up so you can watch the clutches in operation. With a helper you can drive and watch the clutches or if working by yourself you can securely block the back wheels off the ground so you can operate the machine without it moving. Sometimes you will see the primary clutch open to point when at idle. The it will open the last bit after shutting the engine off. This is a very good indication that the clutch needs work.
