I just bought a 96 with gas motor and water cooled. It is running hot the water pump is turning in the wrong direction! Can the motor run in either direction?

No, it is not possible for four stroke gasoline engines to run backwards, it is possible to re-machine them to run the other direction but it requires a machine shop and someone that really knows what they are doing, but with no modifications to the engine it is not possible for it to just suddenly start running backwards.

Four stroke pistons driven gas engines work by initially sucking air and fuel in, then compressing it, firing the spark plug and igniting the air/fuel mixture, creating power/motion, and then pushing/expelling the burnt up vapors out of the exhaust pipe, and then starting this process over again, Diesel engines work on a similar process that I won't get into here...

If you tried to do this in reverse you would be sucking air in through the exhaust pipe and blowing the air out of the intake manifold, the engine would never get any fuel in it to run and the battery would eventually go dead while you were trying to start it (considering that the starter ran in reverse).
