Hey everyone,
My name is Neil. I recently bought an 01 gator 6x4. I was very pleased the first 15 minutes I had it, but that was short lived due to the temp light coming on. After replacing the entire cooling system, waiting weeks for parts, because my local dealer doesnt keep anything in stock, and dumping about $600 into it, i was just relieved to get it back out on the farm. Today, the first day using it since the repairs, it ran great, but after about 20 minutes of use, the steering wheel became really hard to turn. It felt like it was stuck on something, but then after a little more force, it turned fine. I jacked it up in the garage and noticed both boots are ripped. I turned the steering wheel multiple times and it was smooth. Then It would begin to stick again. Figuring it would be a bad rack and pinion, I came in to check price and availability. Obviously it is a special order item, and cheapest cost I could find was $675. Just the boots are $30 a piece. ... Im sorry Im rambling about the issues, but Im in need of some advice, before I sell every green piece of equipment I have. Any advice or ideas are greatly appreciated.

The previous owner was a 90 year old man who had purchased the gator new in 2001 as a way to get himself around his farm. He had it governed to go 9mph top speed and never drove it hard, so he claims. Before I purchased it, I went over everything. I knew there was a hole in the muffler, but that was an easy weld. I ran it for about 20 minutes at his place with no issues, but then after I got it home, its been nothing but problems. The cooling system was time consuming and expensive, and now the steering problem is driving me over the edge. I dont understand why a rack and pinion would be 675$ ... I manage an autoparts store and I sell rack and pinions for heavy duty trucks for about a 3rd of that price.

The deal with the price so high is that you are comparing it to mass produced, high demand parts. It all boils down to supply and demand. It's not the name you are paying for. As for the Gator. The 6x4 is a very sound and stout machine. I've seen it time and time again that people think that they don't go fast, or have the RPM's wrapping, so they are not hurting the machine. Every machine has to be ran the way it is meant to be ran. if you don't pressures build, deposits build, and I bet he didn't service it like he should have either. I'm sorry Deere is putting a bad taste in your mouth over this. But, it is not the machines fault, that's all I'm trying to say.
