Hi everyone... has anyone else in here experienced issues with the gear cables on their gators ? My wife and I have had to replace 3 cables in a 5 month span it's getting frustrating. Not happy at all at this point with the over priced John Deere products.

Has your 590i been hard to shift into and out of gear?

The only cable I've broken on my 550 is the parking brake cable. The gear shift and 4wd selector are still the originals without any problem.

If your machine is hard to shift in/out of gear turn off the engine. If it shifts easy with the engine off then it's a good indication that the primary/drive clutch is sticking and not disengaging properly. If your machine is under warranty I would consider having the dealer replace it under warranty but just know the odds are good that the problem will return. The best thing to do if your primary clutch is sticking is to remove the clutch from the machine and send it to Clutch Doc. He can be reached by sending Bradhill a private message.

In the mean time do NOT force the gear selector lever. If it doesn't want to shift turn the engine off, shift, then restart the engine. Forcing the lever at best will break your shift cable. Worse it can damage the transmission which is very expensive to repair.

No shifting hasn't been difficult at all. These cables keep snapping off at the very same spot each time.
I know exactly what you mean! I go through 2 or 3 shifting cables per season—huge pain in the neck! Just going to get first replacement this year in few minutes. They always break at the end where it connects to the hook. John Deere replaces mine for free every time for first year or two, then warranty ran out and I do it myself to avoid crazy repair fees. Still big hassle that I even need to. I don’t have a solution; I’m on this site because I was looking for one. :) At least I can see it’s not just my problem!

Write a letter directly to JD about how the poor quality of the cables documenting the number of replacements and duration between the purchases. Challenge them if this is indicative of JD quality.

It's crazy to have to continue to purchase the same piece of crap over and over.

Multiple threads of the same request leads to confusion. Suggest you stick with the one you created.
