Hi ... Firstly thank you for letting me join this forum.

I have an older 2006 HPX 4x4 diesle which I've had for over a year now.
I have always known that the handbrake didn't work and was also never sure if the 4 wd was working either . I am not too mechanically minded but can change oil and filters etc. ... I decided to investigate the non working handbrake and noted that when the handbrake is pulled up the lever that its supposed to pull does not move more than 5mm . I tried to pull the lever manually but its solid and not moving any more than the 5mm There is also another lever forward of this one with an operating cable that is connected but doesn't work with any levers in the cab ? ... Could this be the 4x4 mechanism ? ... Sorry to be so vague but I'm no expert and so reaching out for any information whatsoever ... Many thanks in advance.

The cable "that doesn't go anywhere" should be your differential lock apply cable utilized by the parking brake... The theory is that the unit is safer with parking brake on and differential lock applied it is less likely to move. Some of them will actually apply both 4wd and Differential Lock with the parking brake handle... Other models use the calipers to apply the parking brake... Kind of the same design as an older model Subaru would or Nissan with Rear Calipers...
